Essential Jewish Prayers

Modeh Ani

The very first words upon waking: "I give thanks to You, living and eternal King, for returning my soul with compassion." The Rebbe emphasized this as the foundation of daily life.

שמע ישראל

Shema Yisrael

The cornerstone of Jewish faith — "Hear O Israel, Hashem is our G-d, Hashem is One." Recited morning and evening. The Rebbe encouraged every Jew to say Shema daily.

קידוש ליל שבת

Kiddush — Friday Night

The sanctification over wine on Friday evening, welcoming the holy Shabbat. Includes testimony that Hashem created the world in six days and rested on the seventh.

Kiddush — Shabbat Day

The daytime Kiddush on Shabbat morning before the meal, affirming the sanctity of the day.

קדיש יתום

Kaddish Yatom

The mourner's prayer sanctifying G-d's name. Recited during 11 months after losing a parent and on Yahrzeit. Contains no mention of death — only praise of Hashem.

Amidah (Opening)

The "Standing Prayer" — central prayer of every service, recited three times daily. 19 blessings of praise, requests, and thanksgiving. Also called Shemoneh Esrei.

Birkat HaMazon (Opening)

Grace After Meals — thanking Hashem for food. Required after eating bread. Four blessings instituted by Moshe, Yehoshua, David & Shlomo, and the Sages.
